Neko Harbour lies on the eastern shore of Andvord Bay. It was discovered by Gerlache during his Belgian Antarctic expedition (1897-9). It is named for the floating whale factory ship, Neko, which often used this bay. Neko operated between 1911-2 and 1923-4 in the South Shetlands and Antarctic Peninsula. This site is a continent landing and home to approximately 250 breeding pairs of gentoo penguins, some of which nest around the Argentinian refuge hut. Weddell seals may also be seen hauled-out on the cobblestone beach.
Neko Harbour is notorious for its calving glaciers. Spectacular views of Andvord Bay can be obtained from the walk up the ridge.
